Athlete Health
Within the world of sports, it is common for athletes to suffer silently from the pressure of performance perfection, revealing uniforms, media attention, body shaming, and a culture that nurtures eating disorders, all of which increases their risk of developing a mental disorder. This story won a 2020-2021 Hearst Award in the Features Writing category and a regional SPJ medal of excellence for Online Sports Journalism.

Campus Policing
At Catholic colleges across the U.S., students, faculty and staff have called for their institutions to confront racism by cutting ties with local police departments and reforming or divesting from their campus security forces. This story examines the work of organizers at Villanova University, Loyola University Chicago, and Duquesne University.

Elder Care Series
Over the past five years, nearly one fifth of nonprofit nursing homes and one quarter of government-run facilities in New York state were purchased by for-profit companies. Since then, department of health violations have increased and staffing has decreased in these facilities, according to public records. Two families spoke out about their experiences at a for-profit nursing home in Syracuse. This story won the inaugural Dan Rather Medal for News and Guts.

Vaccine Inequity
As early as February 2021, experts and advocates were warning that disabled people and communities of color in the U.S. were already being left out of the early vaccine rollout, even though the virus has disproportionately harmed them.

Rural Healthcare
The trend of hospital closures, which began before the pandemic, only accelerated during COVID-19 — just as infection rates began to spike in rural areas. In this story, I spoke with experts, hospital administrators and residents of rural areas to understand the cost of a hospital closure, and mapped rural Catholic hospitals using a combination of data sources.

Gina Chavez
As a kid, Latin Grammy nominee Gina Chavez was a “super Catholic geek.” When she fell in love with her now-wife, she had to reconcile her lesbian identity with her Catholic faith. Now she hopes she and her bilingual music can build bridges of love and acceptance.

Plastic Wars
With the plastic industry expanding like never before and the crisis of ocean pollution growing, FRONTLINE and NPR investigate the fight over the future of plastics. During my internship at the Investigative Reporting Workshop, I helped with background research and reporting for this documentary.
